Fresh Cut Orchestra has been going non-stop since it was formed in 2012. Along the way we’ve done a commission and residency for the Painted Bride Arts Center of Philadelphia, received another commission and jazz residency at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, and been recognized by the Pew Foundation of the Arts as well as the American Composers Forum. This band has been attracting a wide variety of music lovers and appreciators at performance venues such as the Kennedy Center in DC, and the group is also set to perform at Lincoln Center in New York City in August of 2016. So it’s with the upmost excitement that we are ready to release our second ‘sophomore’ record and for it to be again presented through Ropeadope Records. We will be doing our Philadelphia show at the scene of our creation, our original home, the Painted Bride on Saturday August 27th 2016. Following just two day later we will be extremely excited to perform for the first time as FCO at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center in New York City on Monday August 29th. The FCO shows in general have been selling out fast, so please keep an eye out for when tickets become available. I will post as soon as these two shows become officially announced. We hope to see you there!
As far as the music on this second record… In typical fashion the music collectively represents the compositions of it’s three leaders being trumpeter Josh Lawrence, drummer Anwar Marshall, and myself. Anwar’s compositions on this record, Indecision and New Expectations, I think demonstrate his love to let the musicians in the band interpret his music through their own musical experience. On paper it looks like very little (typical Anwar fashion), but he gives the musicians just enough to allow them to lift the music to incredible heights, which is exactly what I think Anwar is going for. Josh’s pieces in general have always added a huge element of sophistication in the group in my opinion and on this record he has a piece that I’ve been super excited for people to hear, and it’s called Augmented Reality. This is a semi extended work that pushes a bit past 10 minutes and it sounds like it’s right out of a movie. It flows between a classical and at times a raunchy burlesque dirge, and it’s incredibly cinematic! The music that I brought to the table on this record involves my second instrument, the cuatro. This is a 10 string puerto rican instrument that was handed down to me by my grandfather and this recording was the first opportunity to integrate it into Fresh Cut Orchestra. There are three cuatro compositions and they range from traditional, to balkan, to a guitar like approach in the title track Mind Behind Closed Eyes.
